Old Melbourne Gaol

Old Melbourne Gaol is steeped in history, the building was constructed in the mid-1800s and held dangerous criminals alongside petty offenders, the homeless and mentally ill.

From 1842 until it’s closure in 1929, the Old Melbourne Gaol performed the hangings of 133 inmates including Australia’s most infamous bushranger Ned Kelly.

Today the gaol is open to the public to walk it’s halls and learn it’s stories. Take a self-guided tour or if you’re game … a night tour!

Old Melbourne Gaol is located at 377 Russell Street, only a short drive of approximately 5 minutes or about a 20 minute walk from your accommodation staying at Treasury on Collins
